My parents do not believe in allowances, so I'm pretty much a stranger to budgeting and running low on money. I would like to think that I'm good at saving money, but my overflowing bookcases speaks otherwise. So naturally, I'm worried about starving in college next year.
As fate would have it, I just had to pick a college where my chances of having to find creative ways to subsist on that final dollar for the entire month of October and being a source of entertainment for Michelle Wie are virtually guaranteed. Ladies and Gents, welcome to Palo Alto, where the roads are paved in gold, and the price for a standard "2,200-square foot single family house with four bedrooms, two-and-a-half baths, family room and two-car garage" costs US$1.65 million. So says this CNNMoney.com article, which ranks Palo Alto, home to Stanford university, as the most expensive college town.
I'll have to be a miser when I venture beyond the Stanford campus on weekends and holidays. Nearby San Francisco, which is 45 minutes away by train, is ranked as the 3rd most expensive city in the USA. Also, adjacent Oakland-Fremond-Hayward ranks as having one of the highest costs of living in urban areas. Statistics can be found here.
On the bright side, unless I can find a really cheap source of good food to gorge myself on, I won't have to worry about the Freshman 15, just the Freshman -15.
Instant noodles is not good food.
